About Us
ThoolikaSahithyavedi Inc. (Thoolika) is a literary and cultural community organisation formed in 2016 and incorporated in Victoria under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012. The organisation was formed on 11 September 2016 and was publicly launched in Melbourne on 5 November 2016.
Thoolika services a large community of Malayalis in Melbourne’s inner and outer metro areas. As per ABS 2016 Census data, Victoria has a count of 16,950 people who have identified Malayalam as the language spoken at home. The largest proportion, 32%, of Malayalam speaking people in Australia reside in Victoria and the vast majority of them in Melbourne.
Our Objectives
- To develop and maintain the connection of Malayali families and children to their native language, literature and culture by conducting regular events that build up the acceptance and use of the language and literature
- Encourage and promote reading in the language with the support of a dedicated Malayalam language book club in Melbourne, the VipanchikaGranthasala
- Support the publication of writings by emerging writers in the community including children
- Promote basic native language literacy with the aim to provide opportunity for children to undertake language learning at the school level up to year 12 in collaboration with Victorian School of Languages
